Welcome to Yogyakarta! Sugeng rawuh ing Ngayogyakarta!

Opening ceremony of International Geomapping Competition 2013 was held on December 3rd at University Club, Universitas Gadjah Mada. All participants arrived at UC at about 09.00 WIB and welcomed by their Liaison Officer. Before had the opening ceremony, all participants had registration and coffee break. Opening ceremony was started at 10.25 WIB by Anzja and Endah as the host. Followed by Saman Dance performance from students of Regional Planning Department UGM (HMTPWK). Then, all of participants were introduced, they are from Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Universitas Trisakti, Universitas Padjajaran, Universitas Diponegoro, Institut Teknologi Bandung,  Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Yogyakarta, Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Nasional, and from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. Unfortunately the participant from Adamson University, Philippines can’t join us in due to natural disaster. Hence, we had a moment of silence for praying our friends there. At 10.35 WIB, all participants and committees sang national anthem of Indonesia, Indonesia Raya. Then, a video teaser of International Geomapping Competition 2013 was played. What an awesome video! In his speech, Rivdhal Saputra, as head of committee, said that all participants were not only compete against in this competition, but also keep a brotherhood. “I hope this competition begins as a battle but ends as a friendship.” And finally, International Geomapping Competition 2013 was officially opened by Head of Geological Engineering Department of UGM, Mr. Sugeng Sapto Surjono. Opening ceremony was closed at 11.00 WIB by performance from our talented friends, Indranova, Rheva, and Yesita. After opening ceremony, all participants had a photo session, check-in hotel, and lunch.

Then, continued with Technical Meeting at 13.00. Hosted by Yusuf Amien Yafie and guided by Mr. Subagyo Pramuwijoyo, one of the judges, TM discussed about rules and assessment of competition. Participants’ curiosity about mapping area was revealed by drawing to take kavling number. Here they are:

  1. Kavling 1 – Rinjani Team: Universitas Jenderal Soedirman.
  2. Kavling 2 – Merapi Team: Universitas Trisakti
  3. Kavling 3 – Krakatau Team: Institut Teknologi Bandung
  4. Kavling 4 – Toba Team: Chulalongkorn University
  5. Kavling 5 – Tambora Team: Universitas Gadjah Mada
  6. Kavling 6 – Bromo Team: Universitas Padjajaran
  7. Kavling 7 – Merbabu Team: Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran”
  8. Kavling 8 – Sindoro Team: Universitas Diponegoro
  9. Kavling 9 – Kerinci Team: Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Nasional

After TM, all participants had a coffe break. And then at 16.00 WIB, they attended regional geology lecture by Mr. Wartono Rahardjo. It was an important session for participants to get a brief preview what they will find in mapping area. After that, they had a break time and dinner until 20.00 WIB to relax their mind. This first day was closed by an ice breaking session and games. After that, all participants were allowed to take a rest for tomorrow activity, it’s trip to mapping area
